Napoli was my home - Insigne burst into tears after final game

Lorenzo Insigne broke in tears when he became Napoli’s second highest all-time goalscorer when they had their last home game.

Lorenzo Insigne

promised to go back to

Napoli

after meeting the back of the net in his final game with the club as he agreed to make a move to

Toronto FC

when his deal reaches its end next month.

The Italy international met the target from the penalty spot when Napoli secured their top-three finish in the Italian top flight following their 3-0 victory over Genoa on Sunday. The 30-year-old scored his 122 goals for the club, having joined in 2006 at the age of 15.

He became the club’s second-highest goalscorer, moving past Marek Hamsik’s 121, with Dries Mertens being the one to have netted more goals (148).

Insigne delivered nine penalties this season in Serie A and when the game was finished, he began to cry, telling DAZN that Napoli was his “home”.

"I thank all the fans who came to the stadium today to cheer me on, as a Neapolitan it is an immense joy,"

he said.

"In time, the first thing I will do is come back here, this is my home, and you never forget home.

"The love for the city and the jersey is too strong. There are also moments in which choices have to be made.

"Unfortunately, the club and I made this choice, we are happy, both me and them.

"I gave everything, I have no regrets. The fans have always shown me their affection for me, I will always carry it inside."

Insigne did not comment on whether he would have liked to end his career with the club.

"Now I don't feel like saying these things, I made my choice and the club theirs. We are fine like this. I just want to enjoy this moment,"

he said.

"Even if I go far away my heart is here. I will come to see Napoli in the stands as soon as possible because this is my home."
