Caqueret signs a contract renewal with Lyon amid Milan's interest

Wed 11 May 2022 | 17:00

Maxence Caqueret has extended his contract with Lyon, despite reports that he may join Serie A heavyweights AC Milan.

After the

Lyon

playmaker agreed to a new deal with the

Ligue 1

side, Milan's alleged pursuit of him may have to be put on hold.

France The Rossoneri are apparently interested in under-21 international Caqueret, who is looking to win the

Scudetto

for the first time since 2011 - they are two points ahead of adversaries and reigning champions Inter coming into the last two matches of the season.

Milan, on the other hand, are expected to lose midfield star

Franck Kessie

to Barcelona on a free transfer next season.

As a result,

Milan

will be looking for a successor, and Caqueret, a 22-year-old whose contract at Lyon is coming to an end, has aroused their attention.

Caqueret has agreed to a new contract that would keep him at Lyon until 2026, putting an end to any hopes of a free transfer.

Caqueret, who came through Lyon's system, has already appeared in 88 games for the French club. This season, he has played 29 times in Ligue 1 and eight times in the Europa League.

Caqueret has made a team-high 70 tackles in Ligue 1 this season, winning 39 (55.7%) of them, and no teammate has more interceptions than him with 40. Despite failing to score or assist, he has generated 24 opportunities for others.

While Caqueret's deal is a great step forward, Lyon has had a terrible domestic season, and they now sit seventh in Ligue 1 with two games remaining.

With European qualifying seeming improbable, Houssem Aouar and Lucas Paqueta's futures may potentially lie elsewhere, with Bruno Guimaraes already having gone for Newcastle United earlier this season.
