Fulham clinch Championship title as Mitrovic breaks goalscoring record

Mon 02 May 2022 | 19:01

Fulham clinched the Championship title with a 7-0 win over Luton Town on Monday.

Fulham

had already sealed their place in the Premier League last month. Marco Silva, who has had previous stints at Watford, Hull, and Everton in the Premier League, has guided the return to the top flight.

Aleksandar Mitrovic

scored twice in this match to break the record for the most goals scored in one season of the

Championship

in England. The Serbian scored his 42nd and 43rd goals of the season against Luton Town.

Fulham first moved to the top of the table in early August and has been at the top since 20 November. This is the first time Fulham has won a second-tier title since 2000-01.

Fulham at the final game of the season on Saturday will face Sheffield United, who will also be looking to secure their own playoff spot.

The battle for the second automatic spot to Premier League is between Bournemouth, Nottingham Forest, and Huddersfield Town. Two of these three teams will be joined by any two from Luton Town, Sheffield United, Middlesbrough, and Millwall in the playoffs.

The playoff semi-finals take place over two legs, with the team finishing third in the EFL Championship taking on those who ended in sixth. Fifth place team battles fourth for a spot in the final.

The 2021/22 EFL Championship final takes place on Sunday, May 29 at Wembley.
