A spirited second-half display could not prevent Atletico Madrid falling to a 1-0 aggregate defeat to Manchester City as Felipe saw red.

Manchester City

advanced to the

Champions League semi-finals

with a tense 0-0 draw against

Atletico Madrid

in the second leg on Wednesday.

Pep Guardiola

's team took a narrow advantage to Wanda Metropolitano after

Kevin De Bruyne

's lone goal in the first leg last week.

In the second half,

Diego Simeone

's side put them under a lot of pressure, but City held their ground until late when tempers boiled, and Felipe was sent off. For the first time in their history, the visitors secured a 1-0 aggregate victory, allowing them to reach back-to-back Champions League semi-finals.

Following their win against Chelsea on Tuesday, the Premier League leaders will face Real Madrid in the last four. After being teed up by Phil Foden, Ilkay Gundogan struck the base of Jan Oblak's right-hand post from eight yards on the half-hour mark, the first clear sight on goal for either side.

City, who came into the game off the back of a dramatic 2-2 draw with championship rivals Liverpool, appeared the more likely to score in the first half, but they failed to find the target with any of their eight efforts. At the start of the second half, the hosts were much better, and Antoine Griezmann blasted a dipping attempt past the post from the edge of the penalty area just before the hour mark.

After Felipe's late challenge on Foden in the closing stages, both sets of players collided at the corner flag, resulting in a fight. The outcome was a second yellow card for the Atleti defender, bringing the home side's Champions League campaign close on a sour note. Simeone was also booked in stoppage time after coming onto the pitch.

Manchester City to face Real Madrid in the semi-final match

Man City will soon be returning to Madrid, though it will be the Bernabeu rather than the Wanda Metropolitano next up. The first legs to be played April 26/27; the Second legs to be played May 3/4.
