Donnarumma breaks silence after lethal error against North Macedonia

After Italy's humiliating World Cup play-off loss to North Macedonia, Gianluigi Donnarumma has spoken out.

Azzurri supporters slammed the 23-year-old Italian goalkeeper after he took too long to react to Aleksandar Trajkovski's 92nd-minute outside-the-box strike, letting the ball sneak into the far corner. Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup for the second time in a row, putting the Euro 2020 winners in a precarious position.

Donnarumma

addressed the failure against North Macedonia and looked ahead to the future in a post on his Instagram page today.

“We wanted to participate in the World Cup, to experience the extraordinary emotions that these competitions can give, to give smiles to the Italians who accompanied us a few months ago to the conquest of the European Championship.

“Unfortunately it will not be like that, we are very disappointed and we know how much all Italians are, just like us.

“But we also know that in football, as in life, you have to look ahead and get back in the game. Our task is to bring the national team back to where it deserves to be and to build, step by step, a winning future. Forza Azzurri.”

Donnarumma, 23, has had a difficult season after joining the

Ligue 1

powerhouse Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer last summer. He's had to split his starting slot with Keylor Navas, and Azzurri's wobbly moments haven't gone unnoticed.

After his gaffe in PSG's humiliating

Champions League

loss to Real Madrid, questions have been raised about the Italian goalkeeper, and his error in the World Cup play-off defeat has just added to those concerns.
