Messi hints at retirement after the World Cup

The Argentine star mentioned his future with the national team.

has claimed that he will be re-evaluated for continuing to play for the national team after the World Cup in Qatar, and did not rule out the possibility of retirement.

Argentina, who had previously qualified for the World Cup, defeated

Venezuela

in Buenos Aires with Messi in their squad. The Paris Saint-Germain star led Argentina to their first Copa América title since 1993 last year, but Albi Celeste has failed to win the World cup since 1986, when they won the the title with Diego Maradona. They reached the final in 2014 but failed to reach the cup after losing to Germany. Now Messi has claimed that he will re-reassess the conditions for his participation in the Argentine national team after the World Cup in Qatar.

"I don’t know what I will do after the World Cup. I am thinking about what is coming," Messi told reporters after the Venezuela win. "After Qatar I will have to reassess many things."

He added: "I don’t know [about playing on], the truth is I don’t know. I think about what's coming next, only think about facing Ecuador [on Tuesday]. The preparation matches in June and September.

"Let’s hope these go the best way possible. But for sure after the World Cup many things will change."

 

Asked if lifting the last year cup will bear his decision, Messi replied:

"It has been a while that I am happy here, since before winning the Copa. I am thankful for all this they make me feel every time I come to Argentina."
