Gerard keen to make Coutinho's contract permanent

Fri 11 March 2022 | 12:38

The Brazilian star joined Aston Villa on loan in the second half of the season and performed well for the team.

Aston Villa

boss Steven Gerrard has emphasized that he would like to see

Philippe Coutinho

sign on a permanent deal with the club, but that any move would be complicated for the Brazilian star.

The

Barcelona

midfielder has performed well since his loan move to Villa Park and playing under his former team-mate, scoring again in their recent 3-0 win over Leeds United. Aston Villa could finalize Coutinho's contract for €37 million, but Gerrard has claimed that there will be many obstacles to doing so.

The English manager told

:

"I think you all know what my decision would be. I think you all know what I think of him but this is not as straightforward as people think.

"There is obviously an option in place, Barcelona still own the player. Phil has got to obviously want to be here in terms of the big picture but he is enjoying his football and looks happy and settled.

"I know the owners are very ambitious, so we will just analyse it as we go along. But if it was totally on me and it was my cash you know what I would do."

Given the financial crisis Barcelona are struggling with, Blaugrana will certainly be happy with Coutinho's sale, but Aston Villa's main problem is that Coutinho will receive other offers and may hesitate to finalize his transfer to Villa Park.

Aston Villa will face West Ham and Arsenal in their next two games.
