Lopetegui: I'm very grateful for what Sevilla has done for my career

Sevilla has a defining few months ahead of them this season. The Andalusian club is now in second place in LaLiga, six points behind champions Real Madrid. They also have a Europa League last-16 match against West Ham United to look forward to.

Julen Lopetegui took over as coach of

Sevilla

in the summer of 2019 and has since guided the team to consecutive top-four results. In his first season in charge, he also led them to the

Europa League

glory.

He's done an excellent job at the Sanchez-Pizjuan, rebounding back from his well-documented disappointments with the Spanish national team and Real Madrid, as well as disregarding Tottenham Hotspur's attention during the previous close-season.

“It’s an honor and a pride to be the coach of Sevilla,” Lopetegui said in comments carried by

Marca

“I feel fully fulfilled to be in Seville and at Sevilla. Yes, there has been interest, like in the summer, but we decided to be where we wanted to be. We still want to be here and we are very happy. I feel part of Sevilla. Three years develop real roots. I’m very grateful and I will always be grateful for what Sevilla has done for my career.”

Sevilla, coming off from a 2-1 win over Real Betis in the El Gran Derbi at the Sanchez-Pizjuan on Sunday, face Deportivo Alaves on Friday night before welcoming West Ham United in the first leg of their last-16 tie on Thursday. They then fly to Rayo Vallecano before returning to London for the final part of their European tour.
