Napoli at a crossroads, be forgotten or remain heroes - Spalletti

Sat 26 February 2022 | 18:37

The Napoli boss takes on Lazio warns his side that following the loss to the Blaugrana they ‘are at a crossroads, so must choose whether to be forgotten or remembered as heroes.’

Napoli

were defeated 4-2 at the hands of

Barcelona

, whereas

Lazio

went out 4-3 on aggregate when facing Porto.

What irritates me is that we were not up to our own standards,”

said

Luciano Spalletti

in his press conference, on the big mistakes that had them go 2-0 down early doors on Thursday.

“So far this year, we have lacked the identity that we had at the start of the season. This style of football demands quality. If that quality is lacking, it can become a boomerang and come back to hurt us.

“If we are not able to control the ball and play it out from the back with precision, we risk getting embarrassed.”

The

Serie A

title race is wide open since Milan and Inter’s points dropped last night when locking horns with Udinese and Genoa respectively.

“It’s a real battle with many teams that can still get back into the Champions League zone and the title race. I know my players, they recognised this moment, and from now on we’ve got to step on the gas.

“It still always depends on us. I won’t say what our chances are of winning the league, as it’s true we lost momentum, but also have many mysterious sources that can give us solutions to many issues. We play with confidence, knowing this is a chance we can take.

“This is a match that is a big opportunity for us and the solution is to play as Napoli, as a great team. Keep our heads up, take our opponents head-on and let them know we are prepared to play for the win.”

Victor Osimhen should be prepared to be in the starting XI after some knee problems, while Stanislav Lobotka can start on the bench. However, Hirving Lozano and Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa are still out for treatment.

The manager was quizzed whether Napoli fans and the media’s reaction affected their confidence, comparing to Inter and Milan.

“I am convinced the players can conserve my faith in them and their own self-belief. We have to cling to that possibility of giving the supporters something they would never forget.

“We are at a crossroads now, we must choose whether we are forgotten or remain in the minds of Napoli fans as heroes.”

Maurizio Sarri was the man who came close to handing Napoli the Scudetto after Diego Armando Maradona but he is now the Lazio boss.

“He brought some wonderful football here, but now he remains an opponent. We must not be sated, that would be a terrible mistake, so the strategy must be going to win every game.”
