Felix Magath
believes that
Manuel Neuer
’s eventual departure from
Bayern Munichis going to cause a ‘bigger problem’ than that of
Robert Lewandowski
’s.
Neuer made a move to the Bavarian side in 2011 from Schalke and has the most clean sheets in the Bundesliga (209), breaking the record of Oliver Kahn (196) in 2021.
The German’s deal is due to reach its end when the next season is over and he will turn 37, causing rumors and speculations regarding his future at the club.
The shot-stopper has not been playing recently as he underwent knee surgery, which happened at the same time Bayern is suffering from a downturn form.
Neuer started training lightly on Monday and Magath, who had consecutive doubles in charge of Bayern between 2004 to 2006, thinks the player is more crucial to the
Bundesligachampions than Lewandowski.
"
Bayern and the national team live strongly from Manuel Neuer,"
Magath said to German outlet Kicker, adding:
"Marc-Andre ter Stegen can be very good, but he doesn't have Neuer's charisma. Manuel is a stroke of luck for German football."
When asked to make a comparison between Neuer and Lewandowski, Magath responded:
"It will be a bigger problem for Bayern when Neuer is gone."
The 35-year-old contributed to Bayern’s 3-2 victory against RB Leipzig in his last game, when he matched Kahn’s record of 310 wins by a player in Bundesliga with the first 77 coming with Schalke.
Lewandowski has also been running on a rich vein of form this season, meeting the target 39 times which is 14 more than any other player across top five leagues in Europe.
Although Neuer’s comeback is not determined yet, the Poland international will continue his impressive run of form to extend Bayern’s lead when they go against Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday.
