Gallagher backs VAR’s decision to hand Dunk a red card

Dermot Gallagher believes that after Lewis Dunk’s red card following a VAR check in Brighton’s defeat at the hands of Manchester United, “the system is working”, but Graham Potter thinks he was treated badly.

received a red card soon after.

At first, Peter Bankes, the on-field referee, showed the Brighton defender a caution, but VAR official Jarred Gillett had a consultation with Bankes and Dunk’s punishment was upgraded to a red card.

"I think it's a real good case of VAR working. On-field, without doubt, you'd give a yellow card, because by the time Elanga hits the deck, Webster is across. I can understand Peter Bankes' decision.

"You see Elanga picks Dunk's pocket, he's in possession, the criteria is he in possession of the ball? Yes. Is he bearing down on goal directly? Yes, it's very close to the edge of the D.

"Has an obvious goalscoring opportunity been denied? That depends on whether you consider Webster is coming across.

"What you'd say is, if Elanga takes one more step, he has a clear shot on goal. So I think Webster won't catch him there. He may if he decides to dribble on, but he doesn't have to - he can shoot at goal, and once he gets that shot it's a clear goalscoring opportunity."
