Ronald Koeman refused to sign Frank Kessie for Barcelona last summer

Barcelona is looking for a defensive centerpiece to replace Sergio Busquets in the core of their midfield.

They've been for a while, and Georginio Wijnaldum was on his way to becoming that player until he was lured away at the last minute by Paris Saint-Germain.

Franck Kessie, a Milan midfielder, is the latest name to emerge. The Ivorian's agreement with the Rossoneri expires this summer, and the Catalans are keeping a careful eye on market alternatives owing to their financial condition.

Last summer, Barcelona examined Kessie, but Ronald Koeman's club decided against the 25-year-old because he lacked the technical ability to compete at Camp Nou. Barcelona, on the other hand, is having second thoughts about that decision, though it's unclear whether Xavi Hernandez sees him as the midfielder of the future.

Kessie, who has represented Ivory Coast's shirt 52 times, joined AC Milan from

Serie A

opponents Atalanta in the summer of 2019 after serving two years as a loanee at San Siro before. Since then, he has played 207 games for Milan, netting 36 goals and assisting 16 times.
