Australia denied victory in the 2-2 draw with Oman

Australia’s hope for getting an automatic qualification for the World Cup was dealt a blow following their 2-2 draw in Oman.

Abdullah Fawaz

’s brace, including a penalty, had

Oman

seal a 2-2 draw with

Australia

, destroying the Socceroos’ hopes of getting automatic qualifying place for the

World Cup

in 2022.

Although they have secured a playoff spot in Group B of the qualifiers in Asia, Australia are sitting three points short of Japan and four points behind Saudi Arabia on the top of the group.

Australia’s lead in the fifth minute was ruled out after Trent Sainsbury’s header was called an offside. However, the visitors were gifted a penalty soon after when Oman shot-stopper Faiyz Al Rusheidi fouled on Martin Boyle.

In the second half, Oman pulled the game level through Fawaz’s goal. Australia, on the other hand, pushed hard to regain their lead through Mooy, who fired past Al Rusheidi.

However, after Muhsen Al Ghassani substitution, there was more drama, as Abdullah sent Ryan the wrong way with his penalty, helping Oman earn a draw and ruining Australia’s hopes of finishing in second place.
