Senegal reach AFCON quarter-finals after beating Cape Verde

Tue 25 January 2022 | 19:25

Two of the Cape Verde players were sent off before yielding to Senegal, who met the back of the net through Sadio Mane and Bamba Dieng.

Sadio Mane

found the target to help

Senegal

make their way into the quarter-finals of the

Africa Cup of Nations

, eliminating

Cape Verde

, whose two players were sent off in their 2-0 loss.

Patrick Andrade

was dismissed 21 minutes into the game after a VAR check revealed that he fouled on Pape Gueye.

Cape Verde, who made their way through the knockout phase after being one of the top third-placed teams in the group stage, pushed hard to reach the quarter-finals of the competition for the first time since 2013.

However, another VAR check showed that goalkeeper

Vozinha

should receive a red card as well, following a bad clash of heads with Mane.

After seven minutes, Mane was substituted off as he was affected by the collision with the shot-stopper and may be a doubt for their last-eight clash against either Mali or Equatorial Guinea on Sunday.

Senegal, who have yet to concede a goal, reserved a spot in the next round through

Bamba Dieng

’s goal.
