Egypt coach after their first win in AFCON: Next games will be better

Sun 16 January 2022 | 16:53

Diaa El-Sayed, Egypt's assistant manager, stated that his squad would continue to improve during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Egypt secured their first three points in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations by overcoming

Guinea-Bissau

1-0 due to

Mohamed Salah

's winner.

During the 90 minutes, they had enough opportunities to make it an easy win but were unlucky to strike the post three times.

They were also vulnerable on defense, conceding a goal in the final minutes of the game that was subsequently ruled out due to a foul on Egyptian right-back Omar Kamal.

Despite the poor overall display, El-Sayed claims that their main objective was to gain the three points, and he promises that Egypt will play better in the future fixtures of the

AFCON

.

"The performance in the Nigeria match was average and we needed to win today's match, especially that everyone put a lot of pressure on the players and the technical staff," El-Sayed told beIN Sports TV.

"We were able to win. The most important thing in the group stage is the three points, it makes you gain confidence and keep improving.

"I hope that everyone will support us, and we promise that the next games will be better," he concluded.

Moreover, Egypt's playmaker Abdallah El-Said asserted that they needed to win but should have taken advantage of their opportunities more.

“We had some good chances in the first half, but we couldn’t score any of them,” El-Said told the press.

“In the second half, we took more risks and managed to score.

“We won our first game, and god willing the next one will be better. It was an important victory, and I hope that the next one will be better and that we win the next match,” he concluded.

This victory moves the Pharaohs into second position in Group D, with three points, trailing Nigeria, who has six. They'll need to beat Sudan on Wednesday, January 15th, to advance to the round of 16.
