Sun 09 January 2022 | 14:03

Geremi, a Cameroonian great and former Chelsea player picked the seven names to watch out for in the 2021 AFCON, including Egypt's Mohamed Elneny.

The 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is due to begin today afternoon, 9 January, with a match between hosts Cameroon and Burkina Faso at 5 p.m. Cairo local time.

On the other side, Egypt will begin their quest facing Nigeria on the 11th at the Roumde Adjia Stadium in Garoua.

The Pharaohs will be captained by Liverpool sensation

Mohamed Salah

, who will be accompanied by Aston Villa's

Mahmoud Trezeguet

and Arsenal's

Mohamed Elneny

Despite his lack of playing time with the Gunners, Elneny has always been a reliable player for the national team, and Geremi feels the same will be true this time around.

"Mohamed Elneny is also a standout for Egypt, he is an experienced player at the top level and always consistent for Arsenal when he gets the chance to play – and just as important as Mo Salah is for Egypt,"

Geremi told

when quizzed which players he anticipates shining during the competition.

Sebastian Haller (Ajax Amsterdam, Cote d'Ivoire), Ismaila Sarr (Watford, Senegal), Franck Kessie (AC Milan, Cote d'Ivoire), Islam Slimani (Olympique Lyonnais, Algeria), Karl Toko Ekambi (Olympique Lyonnais, Cameroon), and Kamaldeen Sulemana round out the roster (Stade Rennais, Ghana).

Elneny has only played eleven matches for Arsenal since the beginning of the season, three of which were in the

, where he aided his team's progress to the semi-finals.

Owing to his little playing time, Elneny began to emerge on the radars of other teams, particularly as his contract expires at the end of the season, with Newcastle United apparently interested in signing the 29-year-old.
