Klopp misses the clash against Chelsea after contracting COVID-19

Sat 01 January 2022 | 14:22

When the Reds face the Blues at Stamford Bridge this Sunday, they will be without their boss on the sidelines.

Jurgen Klopp will miss Liverpool's match against Chelsea after testing positive for coronavirus for the second time.

Klopp's test result turned out to be positive on Saturday morning and will thus be missing from the Stamford Bridge bench.

Pep Lijnders

, the team's assistant manager, will take command, with three other staff members also expected to miss the game due to contracting the virus.

The Reds' training had already been hampered by the positive tests of three first-team players earlier this week.

According to Goal, Klopp reported moderate symptoms on Friday and returned a probable positive Covid test the next day.

He is in self-isolation while expecting the results of a PCR check, but he did not accompany his team to London on Saturday afternoon, and he is also expected to miss Thursday's Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg clash against

Arsenal

Moreover, three senior players and three additional members of staff have tested positive since the Reds' last game, a loss to Leicester on December 28.

Liverpool will also be missing five first-team players due to injury: Thiago Alcantara, Divock Origi, Takumi Minamino, Nat Phillips, and Harvey Elliott.

According to Liverpool insiders, the club has not approached the

Premier League

to seek a postponement and does not intend to do so at this time.

They are expected to have enough senior outfield players and a goalie to finish the game, though this might change if further positive tests are reported between now and Sunday afternoon.

Thomas Tuchel

, the manager of Chelsea, has been open in his conviction that the Premier League might have done more to assist teams dealing with Covid outbreaks.

The Blues are struggling due to injury and positive cases, but as of now, Sunday's showpiece match is expected to go ahead, although with several crucial players absent.
