The most exciting and interesting match of the Premier League this season is coming up soon as Liverpool is going to welcome Manchester City tonight at Anfield. Here is all you need to know about the match preview:
The teams’ news
What is up with Manchester City?
First, it has to be said that this is a match to have a huge impact on the table and that is why the two rivals have taken it so seriously.
Though City are behind Liverpool, we have to say that they have not been that bad since they have already won 73% of their matches this season and have scored an incredible 34 goals in the process. Last Saturday they went against Southampton in the Premier League, beating them with the result of 2-1 at Etihad Stadium
Considering the number of matches played, they are currently just behind their rivals, with a six points difference asLiverpool are currently on top
with 31 points.
Overall, we have to say that the Citizens have been in this position before and will not be panicking yet.
Liverpool in details
Considering the teams’ scores, we now know that a win in this match would put the reds nine points clear.
Interesting for the Reds, they have dropped just two points in the top flight all season and have won 10 from 11 matches. In their last Premier League match, they won the competition over Aston Villa with a 2-1 result and after that, they met Genk in UCL beating them with the same result.
Manchester City absentees
Guardiola will have to start the match without Ederson after he was taken out in their match against Atalanta on Wednesday due to a muscle problem. That is why Bravo will take place of the goalkeeper for this match.
The 26-year-old goalkeeper is not the Citizens only absentee since David Silva and Rodri will also miss the match. Silva is out due to thigh injury while Rodri is injured in the hamstring.
Unfortunately, that is not all for the Sky Blues as there are also Oleksandr Zinchenko, Aymeric Laporte and Leroy Sane to miss the match. All three are out because of a knee problem.
It also has to be said that there are no suspensions for Guardiola’s men.
On the other side of the pitch, Klopp must start the match without Matip as the center back is still out due to his knee injury.
Xherdan Shaqiri and Nathaniel Clyne are the coach’s other absentees as Shaqiri is out with calf injury and Clyne due to a knee problem.
However, the good news is that bothVan Dijk
and Jordan Henderson are available despite missing training earlier in the week.
Liverpool also has not any suspensions for the upcoming match.
Looking back through the history books, we have to mention that Liverpool have only lost one of their last 28 top-flight home games against Man City in May 2003 with a 1-2 result, and are unbeaten in their last 16 against them at Anfield in the Premier League, winning eleven and drawing five.
It is interesting to know that after losing four Premier League games in a row against Liverpool between 2015-2016, Man City have lost just one of their last five against the Reds in the competition, with two wins and two draws.
Man City are winless in their last 16 Premier League away games against Liverpool, their longest such winless streak against an opponent in the competition’s history.
Liverpool have won more Premier League games against reigning champions than any other side in the competition’s history. In fact, they have won twenty-one matches.
Indeed, they haven’t lost at home in such a match since December 2007 which was over with a 1-0 result against Man Utd, winning six and drawing five since.
This will be the 35th Premier League match between the reigning champions and league leaders; each side have won nine games, with the champions beating Liverpool 2-1 in the last such match in January 2019.
Liverpool have only lost one of their last 50 Premier League games, with 41 wins, 8 draws and 1 loss. The loss came against Man City in January. The Reds are unbeaten in their last 28 Premier League games, the eighth-longest such run in the competition.
The Reds have won a league-high 10 points from losing positions this season. They have won their last two Premier League games despite conceding the first goal. It has to be said that they’ve never done so in three consecutive games in the competition before.
Manchester City have won 11 of their last 12 Premier League away games, losing only against Norwich in that run with the result of 2-3. The Citizens have bagged 30 goals in this period, netting an average of 2.5 goals per game.
Manchester City have only failed to score in six of their 62 Premier League away games under Pep Guardiola. Three of those games have been on Merseyside with two versus Liverpool and one versus Everton and the other three have been in London versus Tottenham, Crystal Palace, and Chelsea.
Despite Liverpool being on the second-longest ever unbeaten home run in Premier League history with 45 games, the Reds have conceded in each of their last five at Anfield. They last had a longer run without a clean sheet at home in October 2014.
About Guardiola, it has to be mentioned that since becoming Barcelona manager in 2008, the coach has lost seven games against Jurgen Klopp in all competitions. This is more than he has against any other manager.
About the team stars, we have to mention that Man City striker Sergio Agüero has made seven Premier League appearances at Anfield without scoring, the ground he has played at the most without finding the net. The Argentinian has had 10 shots across those seven games, with just two on target. We also have to mention that he has scored 49 goals in 79 Premier League games played on Sundays and could become just the second player to reach 50 on that specific day of the week after Wayne Rooney who has 63 goals in 142 games.
Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino has had a hand in seven goals in his eight Premier League games against Man City. In fact, he has scored 4 goals and provided 3 assists, both scoring and assisting a goal in three different games against the Citizens.
The match could also see Raheem Sterling make his 200th Premier League start. It is also interesting to know that 77 of these matches came for Liverpool before he joined City in 2015.
