Wed 08 December 2021 | 20:58

Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers has confirmed seven players will miss their Europa League clash with Napoli due to Covid-19 cases and illness.

The Foxes will finish first if they win or both games are drawn, they could even progress with a loss. Meanwhile,

Napoli

must take three points to ensure a place in the knockout stage.

Brendan Rodgers

also confirmed three of the backroom staff have also not made the trip to Italy.

"We've had a number of people, staff and players, who haven't traveled,"

Rodgers said

.

"We've had some positive [COVID-19] cases, some are generally not well, so we haven't taken the risk."

Youri Tielemans

will be ready for the encounter after being out with a calf injury since November, while

Ryan Bertrand

has also traveled and is in contention to return from injury.

"The players who were unwell who we could have maybe given 24 hours to feel better, we couldn't take any risk with those, so we've kept them at home along with the other guys who were deemed positive,"

Rodgers added

.

The Foxes will face

Tottenham

on December 16 following their home game against

Newcastle

on Sunday.

Tottenham head coach

Antonio Conte

claimed earlier on Wednesday that he was "scared" and that the club was in a "serious" position after eight players and five members of staff tested positive for Covid-19.

Rodgers added:

"In general, you're starting to see a few more cases and, for us, it's always about the health of our players.

"Travelling to a foreign country, we have to respect traveling into Italy. We still have a strong squad here, but unfortunately it's not a fully fit squad."
