star extended his record for most Ballon d'Or awards as he defeatedRobert Lewandowski
to secure his seventh prize.
Last year, Lewandowski ledBayern Munich
to a treble and finished as the top scorer in all three of the competitions. However, the Ballon d'Or was cancelled amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
In his speech after winning the award, Messi hoped France Football would give Lewandowski a Ballon d'Or for his achievements in 2020.
"[Lewandowski], you deserve your Ballon d'Or,"
Messi said after.
"Last year, everyone was in agreement to say that you were the big winner,
"Hopefully [France Football] give you the Ballon d'Or 2020."
Lewandowski congratulated the award winners on social media after receiving the newly-presented Striker of the Year award.
"Congratulations Leo Messi and [Women's Ballon d'Or winner] Alexia Putellas, winners of the Ballon d'Or 2021, congratulations also to all nominated players,"
Lewandowski wrote on his Twitter account.
"I won [the] Striker of the Year Award and no player can win an individual award without [the] strongest team and loyal fans behind him. Thank you for your support."
