The Argentine icon won his seventh Ballon d'Or award in a close race with the Bayern Munich striker.

Lionel Messi won the 2021 Ballon d'Or on Monday. The

PSG

star extended his record for most Ballon d'Or awards as he defeated

Robert Lewandowski

to secure his seventh prize.

Last year, Lewandowski led

Bayern Munich

to a treble and finished as the top scorer in all three of the competitions. However, the Ballon d'Or was cancelled amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

In his speech after winning the award, Messi hoped France Football would give Lewandowski a Ballon d'Or for his achievements in 2020.

"[Lewandowski], you deserve your Ballon d'Or,"

Messi said after.

"Last year, everyone was in agreement to say that you were the big winner,

"Hopefully [France Football] give you the Ballon d'Or 2020."

Lewandowski congratulated the award winners on social media after receiving the newly-presented Striker of the Year award.

"Congratulations Leo Messi and [Women's Ballon d'Or winner] Alexia Putellas, winners of the Ballon d'Or 2021, congratulations also to all nominated players,"

Lewandowski wrote on his Twitter account.

"I won [the] Striker of the Year Award and no player can win an individual award without [the] strongest team and loyal fans behind him. Thank you for your support."
