Gary Hoffman: PL chairman set to step down over Newcastle takeover

Gary Hoffman is set to resign from his position as Premier League chairman after just 18 months following a backlash from clubs relating to the Saudi-led takeover of Newcastle.

A consortium consisting of

Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund

,

PCP Capital Partners

, and

RB Sports & Media

completed the takeover of

Newcastle United

for £305m in October.

The 61-year-old, who has been the Premier League's chairman for 18 months, has faced criticism from clubs for the Public Investment Fund's approval of the takeover.

A number of top-flight clubs complained to the Premier League in October after the change of ownership at St James’ Park, and as claimed by

Sky News

, the majority of the teams wanted Hoffman out.

According to the same source, there is a potential that Hoffman may alter his mind and stay, but only if a big number of teams encourage him to do so. However, this is thought to be unlikely.

He is yet to take a final decision but an announcement of his departure is expected in the coming days.

Hoffman, who was chairman of Monzo Bank Limited, Hastings Group Holdings plc, and Coventry Building Society, took over as Premier League chairman in June 2020 before English top-flight football's restart following the first coronavirus lockdown.
