Ronaldo confident of Portugal advancing to World Cup

Mon 15 November 2021 | 12:49

Last night, Selecao could not get the result he needed to secure his place in the World Cup.

Portugal

captain

Cristiano Ronaldo

has expressed confidence that his team will advance to the World Cup after his side's 2-1 defeat to

Serbia

.

Despite Renato Sanches's early goal in last night's match, two goals from Dusan Tadic and Aleksandar Mitrovic led to Serbia's victory in the match and their direct promotion to the World Cup, and Portugal advanced to the playoffs. Fernando Santos' side is due to fight for the World Cup in March, but Ronaldo is confident his side will be in contention.

"Football has shown us time and time again that, at times, it is the most winding paths that lead to the most desired outcomes,"

the 36-year-old wrote on Instagram.

"Yesterday's result was tough, but not enough to get us down. The objective of being present at the 2022 World Cup is still very much alive and we know what we have to do to get there. No excuses. Portugal [are] heading to Qatar."

Ronaldo had an outstanding performance in the World Cup qualifiers, scoring six goals in seven games and becoming the top scorer in the history of international football, surpassing Ali Daei. Now he hopes that his team can win the playoffs so that he probably does not miss the last World Cup of his football career.
