Bayern Munich forward apologizes for the disastrous loss against Monchengladbach.

German giants

Bayern Munich

, who had scored 13 goals in their three previous matches, suffered a devastating 5-0 loss in their Wednesday’s DFB-Pokal clash against

Borussia Monchengladbach

Bayern forward

Thomas Muller

, whose side lost by at least five goals for the first time since 1987, apologized to the fans for their ‘catastrophic performance’.

"We never got to the point where our Bayern engine kicked in,"

the 32-year-old said.

"We can only apologize to the fans and apologize to Gladbach.

"With the exception of Neuer, it was a catastrophic performance from us.

"I haven't experienced anything like that before. It's difficult to wrap your head round. We have to put it behind us now, because we've got a game on Saturday."

The Bavarians coach Dino Toppmoller also reflected on the heavy loss, saying it was truly a dark day.

"It was an absolutely bad day. I'm sorry that we disappointed our fans today,"

he said.

"We were in constant contact with Julian. We prepared the game plan together and discussed the lineup via FaceTime.

"I don't think it was a system problem – it was just a dark day and we were late to every ball. It's difficult to accept now but we've to show a reaction."
