OFFICIAL: Barcelona have sacked Ronald Koeman

Wed 27 October 2021 | 22:25

Barcelona have relieved Ronald Koeman of his duties as first-team coach following their disappointing 1-0 defeat to Rayo Vallecano on Wednesday evening.

Koeman

has been under considerable pressure for months and on Wednesday,

Barcelona

’s 1-0 defeat to

Rayo Vallecano

was the last straw for the club’s board.

The former

Southampton

and

Everton

boss left his position with the Netherlands in August 2020 to take on his dream role but he has failed to bring success to the Catalan giants. In the summer, Koeman was set to be sacked by

Joan Laporta

but after a replacement was not found, the Dutchman remained.

However, a slow start to the new LaLiga season and back-to-back defeats against

Bayern Munich

and

Benfica

in the Champions League mounted heavy pressure on the 58-year-old coach.

And two consecutive defeats in LaLiga against

Real Madrid

in El Clasico and

Rayo Vallecano

forced the club’s board to part ways with the Dutch coach.

In a statement on their website, the club

said

:

“FC Barcelona has relieved Ronald Koeman of his duties as first-team coach.

“The president of the club, Joan Laporta, informed him of the decision after the defeat against Rayo Vallecano.

“Ronald Koeman will say goodbye to the squad on Thursday at the Ciutat Esportiva.

FC Barcelona wishes to thank him for his service to the club and wishes him all the best in his professional career.”

The search for a new manager will start immediately, with Xavi at the top of the list.
