The great-grandson of the former Italian dictator has been named in Biancocelesti’s squad for their next Serie A match.
Lazio will face Verona in their next Serie A game on Sunday. Ahead of the match, the Biancocelesti have included Romano Floriani Mussolini in their senior squad for the first time.
Having delivered impressive performances for Lazio’s U23 side, Mussolini joined Lazio’s senior team in March. The 18-year-old is the son of Benito Mussolini's granddaughter Alessandra, who is a former member of the European Parliament.
"Here at Lazio I'm judged only for the way I play and not because my surname is Mussolini,"
A minority of Lazio fans have links to Italy’s far-right parties. Banners expressing pride in the fascist movement have been occasionally seen at the Stadio Olimpico in recent seasons, with the club’s “ultras” also being involved with several racist abuse cases.
Romano Mussolini will look forward to making his senior debut for Lazio in the coming weeks. It remains to be seen whether he can overcome the controversy around his presence by delivering convincing performances for his side.
After an underwhelming start to the new season, Lazio have managed to regain their form in recent weeks. Having collected 14 points from their eight matches, the Biancocelesti are currently sixth in Serie A.
