La Liga postpones Real Madrid and Atletico games due to qualifiers

Wed 13 October 2021 | 19:44

The Spanish Superior Sports Council (CSD) accepted La Liga’s request to postpone a pair of weekend matches involving Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.

The games between

Real Madrid

and

Athletic Bilbao

and

Atletico Madrid

and

Granada

will be played at later dates after South American teams decided to keep their Europe-based players for Thursday’s matches.

The league last month had already postponed the games between

Barcelona

and

Sevilla

and

Villarreal

and

Alaves

for the same reason.

"In light of previous considerations, and using the attributes which are legally conferred on me I have resolved to grant the injunction requested by [La Liga president] Javier Tebas Medrano Lopez, representing the National Professional Football League (La Liga),"

CSD president

Jose Manuel Franco Pardo

explained in a statement released on Wednesday.

The news will be welcomed by the Madrid clubs, who would have been missing a number of their first-team players.

Atletico are without Argentina's

Rodrigo de Paul

and

Angel Correa

, as well as Uruguay's

Luis Suarez

, while defender

Jose Maria Gimenez

has returned from Celeste duty early due to injury.

Meanwhile, Madrid has Brazil's

Eder Militao

and

Vinicius Junior

, as well as Uruguay's

Federico Valverde

, in the qualifiers on Thursday.
