Sun 10 October 2021 | 22:21

Spain captain Sergio Busquets was left frustrated after VAR's controversial decision in their 2-1 defeat to France in the UEFA Nations League final.

Luis Enrique

’s side were the better team for most of the time and took the lead after 64 minutes, but France’s attacking talents and a controversial VAR decision proved too much for Spain and Les Bleus became Nations League winners.

With 10 minutes remaining,

Theo Hernandez

delivered a through ball to an offside

Kylian Mbappe

, but Eric García’s attempted interception fell to Mbappe who put the ball into the back of the net. According to VAR,

García

’s touch played Mbappe onside and the goal was given, completing the French comeback.

However, speaking after the game,

Barcelona

midfielder

Sergio Busquets

claimed the goal was offside but admitted

Spain

also came up short in certain areas.

“The second goal seemed offside to me. We pulled up the defensive line really well”,

as per reports from

Cadena COPE

.

“I think Mbappe was offside.

“However, we need to make another small step to win major titles.”

Despite the disappointment of the result on the night, it was a memorable night for Busquets as he was awarded the Player of the Tournament award.
