Paco Alcacer broke the deadlock after the break but Alex Telles and Cristiano Ronaldo both were on target as the Red Devils’ bagged all three points, thanks to a late winner by their Portuguese legend.

A 95th-minute goal by Cristiano Ronaldo sealed the Red Devils

a 2-1 Champions League victory over Villarreal

as Ronaldo became the first player to net a 90th-minute winner in the Champions League for Manchester United since Marouane Fellaini in November 2018.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner told

BT Sport

 post-match:

"Everything is open and we believe we can go through [the group].

"This is why I came back because I miss this club, I made history here and I want to do it again.

"I have to say thank you not only from me but from all the team for pushing the team so far this season."

Ronaldo's

late heroics made him the United's second-oldest scorer at home in European competition after Bryan Robson. He also surpassed former Real Madrid team-mate Iker

Casillas

to become the Champions League's outright appearance holder in his 178th match.

Ole

Gunnar

Solskjaer

hailed the impact of the Portuguese in his post-match conference

. He Said:

"Sometimes it's not about 'pass there, pass there', it's the crowd - the Stretford End has sucked in a few balls before, I know that - and when you've got Cristiano on the pitch there's always a chance.

"He's so, so good in front of goal. He has an impact on everyone - the crowd, the players, the whole club.

"It's massive for the players of course, to win games in this fashion after we lost in Bern in that fashion, it's great. I'd rather have a win and a defeat than two draws.
