Higuain talks about Real Madrid frustration

Sat 18 September 2021 | 12:20

The 33-year-old met the back of the net 121 times when playing in Spain but revealed that it was tough when the club had a plethora of signing Galacticos.

Gonzalo Higuain

admitted how frustrated he felt when

Real Madrid

penned with

Karim Benzema

and

Kaka

in the same season that had him finished as the top scorer.

The Argentine, who features for

Inter Miami

now, played for the La Liga giants from 2007 to 2013 but he then left the club to join Napoli, having met the target 121 times during his time in Spain.

Los Blancos’ signing of Benzema and Kaka in 2009 had disappointed him, when

Cristiano Ronaldo

was also part of the team. The situation had him thinking how many goals he had to net to remain in favor.

Higuain, who actually netted 27 La Liga goals during that 2009-10 season, told

ESPN Futbol 360

"With Benzema it was a very healthy competition, but we had to do our best.

"The year Cristiano arrived, he scored 27 goals (sic) and I scored 26 (sic). The next transfer window (sic) they brought in Kaka and Benzema. That's when I said: 'how many goals do I have to score?'

"Karim came in and he brought out the best version of me and I brought out the best version of him. He's a tremendous number nine."

The Argentine joined Real Madrid from River Plate in 2006, contributing to La Liga title win during his debut season, despite meeting the back of the net twice.

He managed to help the club win another league title during the 2007-08 season, finding the back of the net nine times and over the next two seasons, he went on to score 53 goals.

His output, however, dropped in the 2010-11 campaign as he had to deal with injuries. In the 2011-12 season, he had a pivotal role, netting 22 league goals to help Real Madrid win the league title once again.

Talking about his time with Los Blancos, Higuain said:

"I wasn't going to go to the first team of Real Madrid. They bought me and they were going to keep me at Castilla. There was the possibility of going on loan as well.

"My dad told me on the plane: 'The only thing I'm going to ask you is not to be afraid. Never be afraid, but be respectful...' and that phrase stayed with me.

"When I arrived, I trained with the first team and in the second training session [Fabio] Capello told me: 'You're staying with us'. Three or four days later I made my debut as a starter in the Copa del Rey. I ended up playing on the right wing."
