‘It’s by no means an easy group’ – Gasperini on Atalanta’s CL group

Mon 13 September 2021 | 18:29

Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini expects a difficult match in their Champions League opening game against Villarreal and says they have no room for error as they are in the group of death.

Villarreal

and

Atalanta

will lock horns on Tuesday night, with the two teams opening their Champions League group-stage campaign at Estadio de la Ceramica.

Villarreal ensured that they would be present in the group stages of the 2021-22 Champions League by winning the Europa League last term, with the Yellow Submarine beating

Manchester United

in the final.

La Dea have never taken on Villarreal and Gasperini expects a tough start against

Unai Emery

’s men tomorrow.

“We know what Villarreal express, especially at home,”

Gasperini said at a press conference.

“It will already be an important game for this Champions League.

Atalanta have only won one of their three Serie A games this season.

“We must also take inspiration from unfortunate games such as the last League match,”

Gasperini added.

“The anthem of the Champions League gives great stimuli, and we must be ready, being in the third consecutive year.

“We meet very strong teams but playing in this competition is superior to all.”

The pundits expect Atalanta and Villarreal to fight for second behind Manchester United in the group.

“Young Boys have already given the Italians problems, it’s by no means an easy group. There are only six games and there’s no margin for error.

“We will have to try to score points on all pitches and in every game.”
