Vlahovic: I followed my heart to stay at Fiorentina

Sun 12 September 2021 | 7:47

The Viola star was linked with several top clubs this summer but ultimately decided to stay at the Artemio Franchi Stadium.

Since his move from Partizan in 2018,

Dusan Vlahovic

has developed himself into one of the best strikers of the Serie A. The Fiorentina star was heavily

linked

with a move away from the club this summer, with Atletico Madrid and Tottenham being his main suitors. However, the 21-year-old decided to stay at Fiorentina, where he has managed to continue his impressive performances.

Vlahovic converted two penalties in his side’s 2-1 win over

Atalanta

on Saturday, taking his tally to five goals in four matches this season. In a post-match interview, the Serbia international spoke about his decision to stay at the Italian club.

“We always believed in this team, from the moment we started working with the coach. We are just at the beginning, we must keep working hard, listening to the boss, being a team and then we can do great things,”

the 21-year-old told

Sky Sport Italia.

Asked whether he considers himself among Europe’s top strikers, Vlahovic responded:

“No, it just means I need to keep working with humility and determination. I can gain experience and continue along this path, then we can achieve great results.”

Tottenham and Atletico Madrid initiated a bidding war to sign Vlahovic during the summer transfer window, but Fiorentina were determined to keep Vlahovic. However, the Serbian star insists his decision to stay in Italy was not affected by the club’s transfer priorities.

“I said many times that I decided to stay in Florence, nobody else had to decide for me. When the coach arrived, and the squad we put together, it’s good. At the end of the season, we will see if it proved to be the right decision, but I followed my heart.

“I am young, my moment will come and I just need to continue working like this.”

Following their shock win over Atalanta, the Viola will meet Genoa in their next Serie A game on Saturday.
