Raul Albiol: Atalanta is a role model for Italian football

The Villarreal defender praises Atalanta ahead of his side’s Champions League clash against the Italian team.

, who moved from Napoli to Villarreal in 2013, has become a cornerstone of the Yellow Submarine’s squad in recent years. The experienced defender hopes his former side can beat Juventus in their Serie A clash on Saturday.

“I obviously hope Napoli win. I saw Spalletti’s Azzurri in the first two games, and I liked them a lot,”

Albiol told

La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“On the other hand, I see a Juventus under construction, and I think they will pay more due to the international break.

“In Naples, however, I left my heart, so I can only cheer for them. I often speak to [Kalidou] Koulibaly, [Lorenzo] Insigne and Fabian Ruiz, we are not just linked by friendship, but also by the many good times we spent together.”

Villarreal must face

Atalanta

in their first Champions League game of the season on Tuesday. Albiol is excited about meeting La Dea but thinks his side will face a hard test. 

“On Tuesday we face Atalanta, it will be a very difficult match,”

Albiol continued.

“They are a great team, with a great project based on the growth of youngsters and work ethic.

“It’s a model to follow. In a certain sense, we can say that we are both the answer to the Super League project.”

Villarreal have started their new La Liga campaign with three draws. Unai Emery’s side will continue their league campaign with a match against Mallorca on September 19.
