Pau Torres, a defender for Villarreal, has stated that he turned down a summer move offer from Tottenham Hotspur.
Villarreal's top center-back was expected to be challenging to maintain hold of in the run-up to the transfer window.
However, the Yellows were not inundated with bids when Real Madrid chose not to replace their departed center-backs and Chelsea and Manchester United went elsewhere.
They did, however, receive a bid from Spurs for the 24-year-old Torres, which was approved, according to manager
Unai Emery
.
Torres, who grew up in Vila-real and won the
Europa Leaguewith his hometown club last season, opted against the transfer because he wanted to play
Champions Leaguegames with the Yellow Submarine.
He said in a news conference this week of the proposal: "I have always been clear that I wanted to continue at Villarreal, and for this reason, the decision was made very quickly."
Torres, who is an icon at Villarreal for his commitment to his local club, has proven his allegiance in this way.
And, while the day may come when he decides to go, Torres has a leftover duty in the Champions League to deal with at first.
