The former Lyon forward was on the verge of signing a deal at Anfield in 2018.

Nabil Fekir

was among the most wanted forwards in the summer transfer window of 2018. Having spent a successful season at Lyon, Fekir won the World Cup with France and was ready to make his breakthrough at the elite level. However, a failed transfer to Liverpool changed Fekir’s career, which was then continued by a move to Real Betis in 2019.

In an interview with

The Times

, Fekir insists his agent had a major role in the failed transfer.

“It was a dark moment,”

the former France international said.

“I saw plenty of things which weren’t true. It was said the knee stopped me going to Liverpool but that wasn’t true.

"I went to Clairefontaine [France’s football centre near Paris], and they did all the proof [medical] and the knee was fine.

"I had a problem with my agent, my adviser. It was the agent responsible for the deal not going through. Of course I was disappointed not to go to Liverpool, very disappointed because Liverpool are a great club."

Fekir has scored 12 goals and provided 13 assists in his 74 appearances for Betis. The 28-year-old was not included in Les Bleus' squad for the Euros this summer, but he might still have a chance to play his second World Cup at Qatar next year.
