‘Italy should have been more clinical’ – Roberto Mancini
Italy manager Roberto Mancini believes his side was not clinical enough in their 1-1 draw against Bulgaria on Thursday night.
The European champions were held to a 1-1 draw by
Bulgaria
in their Group C World Cup qualifier on Thursday.
Federico Chiesa
opened the scoring for Italy after 16 minutes in the first half, but
Atanas Iliev
scored the equalizer five minutes before the break.
Italy dominated the game in terms of ball possession and chances created in front of the goal, but Bulgarian goalkeeper
Georgi Georgiev
produced at least four or five decisive saves.
“We should have been more clinical. We created many opportunities. It was one of those games where we could have played for 30 more minutes without scoring,”
Mancini told Rai Sport
.
“We conceded a random goal, perhaps we should have committed a foul to stop the attack. Still, we should have been more clinical. We gave our all to win this game. We have an important game on Sunday and we must win.”
Despite the draw, Italy remained at top of the group with 10 points from four matches, four points clear of Switzerland in second albeit having played two games more.
