Ilaix Moriba opted to sign for Leipzig over Tottenham for a €16m fee this summer as the Guinean midfielder will be Marcel Sabitzer’s replacement.

The youngster made his way through Barcelona’s first team last season

, earning himself some minutes under the reign of Ronald. Many clubs entered negotiations with the Catalans as he entered the final year of his contract with the Blaugrana.

However,

the 18-year-old opted to join Leipzig over other pursuers

. He told Leipzig’s official website after penning his contract:

“I’m very happy to be able to join RB Leipzig.

"It’s a very exciting club, one that has always preferred to play attacking football, which fits perfectly to me.

"I’m confident that Leipzig is the right place for me to take the next step in my career and continue my development, which is what informed my decision.

"Now, my full focus is on settling in at the club, within the team and the city in order to be able to play to my best as quickly as possible. We have big goals this season and I can’t wait to take on this challenge at Leipzig.”

Due to Moriba’s contract situation

, the La Liga giants had two options, either cash in on him or risk losing him for free next year, with Barcelona president making himself clear that the former would be the choice.

The 18-year-old also wants to switch his international allegiance to the country he was born in, Guinea, from where he was raised in, Spain.
