Manchester United’s

former star,

, is being investigated for his possible involvement in a criminal cryptocurrency organization alongside seven other people, all of them charged with aggravated theft, fraud, and money laundering following the authorities' investigation in Brazil.

The former football player has denied his involvement in the criminal acts and insists that he has been a victim, according to his lawyer, but the reports suggest that the group stole and laundered money through the use of the virtual currency.

"We have not been summoned, it is hard to talk right now,"

the former player's lawyer Julio Cezar Coitinho Junior explained to Globo

"There is an investigation underway, Anderson has said he is aware. But Anderson is going to prove that he was a victim, not an accomplice. That is his position."

The former Brazil international who started his career in Gremio and experienced his best days at Old Trafford was in his hometown Porto Alegre, and the operation that the police is investigating was completed in April 2020 when R$30 million (£4m/$5.5m) was stolen from a major Brazilian industrial firm, and then it was deposited in 11 bank accounts across four states in Brazil and was laundered by the purchase of cryptocurrency both locally and overseas.
