‘I’m not a hero, I just did what I had to do’ – Simon Kjaer

Milan center-back Simon Kjaer has said he did nothing heroic when he helped Christian Eriksen during Denmark’s clash with Finland at Euro 2020.

Christan Eriksen

collapsed during the first half of the Group B match against

Finland

and had to be rushed to the hospital after being resuscitated on the field at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen.

Denmark captain

Simon Kjaer

delivered emergency treatment before medics reach the player and his quick thinking helped save Eriksen’s life.

Kjaer has been hailed as a hero for his decisive actions to help his teammate, but speaking to

Corriere della Sera

, the defender insisted he did what he had to do and he is not a hero.

“I’m not a hero, I just did what I had to do, without thinking, like anyone else would,”

Kjaer told the newspaper

.

“It was a historic day for all of us Danes, the first match of the European Championship, in our home stadium.

“Then what happened, happened. I was ready to remain lucid, like all my teammates. It was a team effort, obviously we would have done the same if he had been an opponent.

“That’s all. The only thing that matters is that Christian is fine now. That’s the only important thing. I did it without thinking.

“Instinct guided me, and I did what I had to, automatically. It was the first time this happened to me, I hope it’s the last too.”
