Barcelona have confirmed that Lionel Messi, whose contract expired at the end of last season, will leave the club.

Both parties had reached an agreement over a new deal before the Catalan club announced today that the Argentinean will not return to Camp Nou because of economic and structural obstacles.

The six-time Ballon d’Or winner was adamant about leaving the club last summer, but he finally resolved things with ex-president

Josep Bartomeu

.

As per

Marca

, Lionel Messi’s father and representative

Jorge Messi

met with

Barcelona

to discuss the situation on Thursday.

This whole saga with Lionel Messi is shocking, but it looks like it may have reached a point of no return and the situation seems impossible to resolve.

Barca confirmed Messi could not formalize the agreement, meaning Messi "will not continue to be linked to FC Barcelona".

A statement read:

"Despite having reached an agreement between FC Barcelona and Leo Messi and with the clear intention of both parties to sign a new contract today, it will not be possible to formalize it due to economic and structural obstacles (Spanish LaLiga regulations)."

"Given this situation, Lionel Messi will not continue to be linked to FC Barcelona.

"Both sides deeply regret that the wishes of both the player and the club cannot ultimately be fulfilled.

"Barca would like to thank the player most sincerely for his contribution to the aggrandisement of the institution and wishes him the best in his personal and professional life."

Messi joined Barcelona at the age of 13 and has scored score 683 times in 810 games for the club.

The 34-year-old has also won 34 trophies with Barca, including 10 La Liga titles and four Champions League.
