Belgium wins gold medal in men’s hockey in Tokyo

Belgium defeated Australia in a dramatic final in the Tokyo Olympics.

The final between

Belgium

and

Australia

was a tough match that ended dramatically for the Belgians as they were in the lead with Florent van Aubel’s goal, which was scored in the 32nd minute of the game, but the Australians, who weren’t there to lose easily, leveled the game in the fourth quarter with Thomas Whetton’s goal to end the full-time with a 1-1 draw.

In the penalty shootouts, Belgium scored three goals against Australia’s two to bring Hockey’s gold medal to Belgium for the first time in their history. They had experienced a silver medal at Rio 2016 and a bronze at Antwerp 1920, and after becoming the 2018 world champions, they managed to claim the Olympics’ gold medal for the first time.

Felix Denayer has talked about his side’s dramatic victory saying that although they have been dreaming about the honor, they can’t believe that they have achieved it.

"I think I am still dreaming and overwhelmed by emotions,"

he said.

"But it will really come true when we get it around the neck. It is something we have been waiting for our whole lives. We dreamed about it, we believed we could achieve it, but we knew it was going to be really, really hard.

"This was the second opportunity, we lost five years ago, and now we have got it. Amazing. I am super proud of this team.

“In the end a shoot-out, and we have some crazy, crazy goalie who took it home for us."
