Saul has developed a reputation as one of the best box-to-box midfielders in the world in recent years but struggled for regular game time during the 2020-21 campaign.

Initially, it looked

as the 26-year-old may be involved in a swap deal with Barcelona's Antoine Griezmann

, but now that appears negotiations have fallen through, Liverpool are reportedly leading the race for the Spaniard.

According to

, Liverpool are closing in on reaching an agreement with Atletico Madrid over Saul Niguez. According to the outlet, their fresh bid of around £41 million will be enough to appease the Spanish giants.

After falling out of Diego Simeone’s favor last season, Elche-born Saul is expected to leave Wanda Metropolitano this summer. Atletico Madrid are prepared to cash in on him this summer in an attempt to inject some much-needed financial boost.

Simeone is willing to sell him to a Premier League team for a reasonable amount since he plans to acquire a new forward this summer, with Chelsea outcast Hakim Ziyech reportedly identified as one of the potential targets for Diego Simeone.

Hakim Ziyech was expected to become a key player in Chelsea

when they signed the creative playmaker in the summer transfer window. However, back-to-back injuries prevented him to make an actual impact on London’s side as he has yet to show his real value for Thomas Tuchel’s side.
