: "The FAW is saddened to learn that former Cymru manager Mike Smith has passed away, aged 83.

"The thoughts of everyone at the FAW are with Mike Smith's family and friends at this sad time."

Born in Hendon, England, he became the first-ever non-Welshman to manage the Wales national team when he took charge in 1974.

He guided them to the 1976 European Championship quarter-finals, where they suffered a 3-1 defeat to Yugoslavia.

Smith left his post in 1979 and took charge of English Third Division club Hull, but only lasted three years in the post before he and coach Cyril Lea were sacked.

He was appointed as Egypt manager in 1985 and he led them to victory in the 1986 African Cup of Nations - making him the only British coach in history to win the competition.

The Englishman departed Egypt's national team in 1988 and was named a Football development consultant to Anglesey County Council.

Then, after a spell in charge of the Wales Youth team, Smith returned for a second spell at the senior job from April 1994 up until September 1995.
