Chelsea makes Giroud’s transfer harder

Thu 15 July 2021 | 18:39

Chelsea makes it as hard as possible for Milan to sign Olivier Giroud.

Olivier Giroud

had a personal agreement with

Milan

on a two-year deal worth €3.5m per season that probably had a third-year option, and Giroud was considered a free agent as his contract with

Chelsea

expired on June 30.

But the Premier League side decided to make everything harder, announcing that they have activated a unilateral clause in his contract, extending to June 2022.

The decision upsets the Serie A side so much that they claimed that they would look for other options to sign instead of the French striker, but Giroud’s representative has talked about the matter, insisting that the Blues have made that decision as a formality and they intended to prevent the player from joining other Premier League sides especially West Ham United.

Despite their interest in sending the France international abroad even with a minimal fee, the negotiations with the Italian side took weeks, and they have finally reached an agreement.

The reports suggest that Chelsea will receive €1m for the player and another €1m based on the player’s performance. These add-ons are based on the number of appearances, goals, and achievements unlocked by Milan throughout the season.
