Inter hit back at Sporting about Joao Mario

The Nerazzurri’s statement spoke in opposition to the ‘unacceptable, extremely serious and without basis in truth’ allegations that Sporting CP made about Joao Mario and Inter’s agreement.

“FC Internazionale Milano is aware of the statement released to the media by Sporting Clube de Portugal.

“The comments are unacceptable, extremely serious and – most importantly – without basis in truth.

“The club will protect its image and reputation in the relevant forums.”

The statement was released after Sporting CP accused

Inter

and

Joao Mario

of avoiding the €30m penalty clause signed in 2016, which forces the club to pay that amount should the player be sold to another Portuguese club.

To prevent it, the Nerazzurri ended the contract with the midfielder and he signed with

Benfica

when he became a free agent. Benfica offered him way more than what

Sporting

were willing to pay.

The 28-year-old was playing for Sporting Lisbon on a loan spell last season, but decided to make a move to their rivals Benfica for the 2021-22 season. Inter’s signing of Mario in 2016 cost them €40m but he did not rise to the expectations.
