Phil Foden failed to recover from his injury in time to reach the Euro 2020 final.

Phil Foden

was injured during

England’s

last week training, and he wasn’t able to recover from it, so

Southgate

had to leave him out despite seeing it very heartbreaking.

England manager was hoping to be able to use the Manchester City star, but he wasn’t able to run properly in the pre-match to make it clear that he isn’t fit to play in the Euro 2020 final against Italy.

Speaking to ITV before kick-off, Southgate said:

"It’s very difficult. It’s not something that’s going to keep him out for a long time, but unfortunately he wasn’t able to run properly yesterday.

“It’s heartbreaking for him and a disappointment for us.

“It’s an occasion that, every message you read and everybody you see, gets you more excited about.

“But we have to make good decisions on the field, we’ve got to make sure that we play with discipline.

“We’ve also got to make sure we bring our best game, it’s not a day to sit and be safe and worry about making mistakes. We’ve got to be bold.”

Southgate has decided to play against the Azzurri with a new formation and seems to have new plans for the final match as he knows how dangerous this opponent can be compared to the previous opponents in the previous stages of the tournament.
