Real Madrid will win something - New captain Marcelo

Sun 11 July 2021 | 8:20

Los Blancos ended last season without any trophies and Sergio Ramos’ departure has seen Marcelo named as the captain of the team.

Marcelo

believes

Real Madrid

will start winning trophies for the next season after

Carlo Ancelotti

gave him the captain’s armband.

The 33-year-old replaced

Sergio Ramos

and took charge of the captaincy duties as the Real Madrid legend left the club after 16 years to join

Paris Saint-Germain

. Marcelo considers himself ‘extremely lucky’ to be chosen.

The Brazilian is hoping to be a regular under the reign of the Italian tactician, who returned to Santiago Bernabeu after Zinedine Zidane parted ways with the club following a trophyless season.

Ancelotti managed the club from 2013 to 2015 and he came back to snatch the La Liga title from Atletico Madrid.

Marcelo said:

"We're aware that it's very tough to go through a season without winning a title, but we fought 'til the end of the season.

"I'm sure we're going to win something. We're very happy, we've still got players to come back from international duty or on holiday, but we're very motivated for the season to start."

Notwithstanding only 12 starts in La Liga under the reign of Zidane, Ancelotti targeted Marcelo as he was looking for a dressing-room leader and the left-back has been a long-serving player for 15 years.

"It's an honour and an enormous responsibility to be captain of the greatest club in the world. I'm extremely lucky," Marcelo said on Madrid's official website.

"I learn a lot every season, there's always something new. I'm even more excited about this campaign because I'm Real Madrid captain. It's a dream come true for me and I believe I've done everything I can to be here for such a long time.

"I believe that as captain I'm the spokesperson for the team and I'll always look to help as much as I can, just like I've always done."
