Belgium have reached the quarter-finals of Euro 2020, having defeated Portugal 1-0 in the last 16 tie on Sunday and will face Italy next.

Portugal

in Euro 2020’s Round of 16 on Sunday in a humongous tie, which is the tournament’s most heavyweight clash in the knockout stages. Champions Portugal had to defend against world No1 Belgium. Three years ago, Roberto Martinez’s men went to the World Cup semi-finals and were eager to win Belgium’s first major tournament. They have cruised through the group stage, being one of the teams who had won all three games in their group against Russia, Denmark, and Finland. Portugal, meanwhile, struggled to reach the Round of 16 after pulling themselves through a so-called Group of Death.

Thorgan Hazard

gave Belgium a lead with a brilliant goal that swerved from Rui Patricio and flew into the net in the 42nd minute, which was the only highlight of a cagey and somnolent first half.

Early in the second half, Kevin De Bruyne had to be replaced by Dries Mertens due to injury. Portugal have pushed to score the equalizer but failed to do so and for the first time since 1992, they didn’t reach the final eight of the European Championship. The reigning champions played better, especially in the second half, but couldn’t break Belgium’s defence.

Belgium will go against Italy in the quarter-finals of the tournament after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Portugal.
