Cristiano Ronaldo matches Ali Daei record for most international goals

Wed 23 June 2021 | 21:02

Portugal striker Cristiano Ronaldo has drawn level with Iran’s former forward Ali Daei for the most goals at the international level.

The Portuguese captain scored two important goals from the spot in Wednesday’s crucial Euro 2020 match against

France

to tie the men’s most international goals record.

That takes his tally to 109 goals in 178 games for his side, putting him at the top of the list of goalscorers on the international stage.

After

Danilo

had been caught by Hugo Lloris in the air,

Ronaldo

stepped up to send the ball into the back of the net and made it 1-0.

Karim Benzema

scored twice, either side of half-time to put the world champions in front at the Puskas Arena.

But Ronaldo was given the chance to score the equalizer on the hour mark after Jules Kounde’s handball inside the area.

Ronaldo needs only one more goal to become the sole highest scorer.

He is currently tied with Iran legend

Ali Daei

, who scored 109 times in 149 matches between 1993 and 2006.
