Ukraine 0-1 Austria, unexpected & courageous display by the Austrians

Mon 21 June 2021 | 18:45

In their last Group C fixture, Austria defeated Ukraine with one goal to advance to the knockout stages of the European competition for the first time, facing Italy in the round of 16.

Both teams started the last match of their group stage with three points in their pocket, which ended in a 1-0 victory for Austria. They have qualified for the round of 16 after finishing second in their group behind the Netherlands.

Franco Foda's team put up a valiant performance in Bucharest, and

Christoph Baumgartner

's close-range shot after

David Alaba

's corner was enough to secure a clash with the Italians at Wembley on Saturday.

In the 29th minute, Ukraine could have scored the equalizer in two series, but the Austrian goalkeeper's outstanding reaction prevented Andriy Shevchenko's men from scoring, and the game continued with the same result.

Ukraine kept launching attacks towards the Austrian goal but failed to score the leveler until the end of the first 45 minutes.

As expected, the second half started with the Ukrainian attack, and the team could have scored the equalizer in the 61st minute on a free-kick. Still, Yarmolenko's shot was saved by the Austrian goalkeeper

Daniel Bachmann.

In the continuation of the game, Ukraine had the ball and created opportunities on their opposition but could not find the net until the final whistle, with the unexpected result of 1-0 in favor of the Austrians.

With Austria's victory over Ukraine, the team gained six points and advanced to the next stage of

Euro 2020

as the second team. Ukraine, who finished third in Group C, now should sit tight to see if their three points are enough to go to the knockout rounds, and Austria might have punished them much more severely.
