The former Germany international criticized Ronaldo’s showboating against Rudiger in Portugal’s defeat against Die Mannschaft.
Having beaten Hungary with a 3-0 result in their opening match of the tournament,Portugal
in their second Euro 2020 game on Saturday. Cristiano Ronaldo scored the opener for the reigning champions in the first half, but Germany took control of the match and ultimately won the game with a 4-2 result. Ronaldo was criticized for his showboating against Antonio Rudiger minutes before Germany’s equalizer. The Juventus star motioned for an aerial duel as if he was going to control the ball, but he ultimately made a no-look pass that left Rudiger bamboozled. Former Germany international
believes Ronaldo’s piece of showboating might have been the inciting incident for Germany’s comeback.
"I think it's nonsense,"
Hamann said in an interview with
RTE. "He flicks the ball over, pretends he is going to catch it and backheels it across, and looks away... of course it is [amazing] and we know he can do that... I think, in a way he's belittling the opposition."
"Yes, he’s the best alongside [Lionel] Messi, but he looks like an idiot.
"If you ask the German players, they’ll tell you what they thought. They’ll have noticed. What are you trying to achieve? Perhaps that was the beginning of the comeback.”
